Air-Fried Pizza Burgers

I love using the air fryer for burgers, especially in the winter when the grill is not as easily accessible. The burgers get hit with that direct hot air from the air fryer fan and the grease drips away into the bottom drawer of the air fryer.

While there’s definitely a time for the perfect regular burger made your way with or without toppings, sometimes it’s fun to add ingredients to give your burger whole different look. It’s like putting on an outfit that you don’t usually wear and when you do, you think “hmmm.. this looks pretty darn good on me!”. These air-fried pizza burgers are that new outfit for an old favorite.

Ingredients for air-fried pizza burgers - beef, tomato paste, onion, pepperoni, Italian seasoning.

Mixing pepperoni, tomato paste, onion and Italian seasoning into the beef mixture gets you started on flavoring the burger like a pizza. Topping the burger with pizza sauce and some mozzarella cheese finishes it off and let’s you enjoy two favorites at the same time!

Pizza sauce, cheese and ciabatta - all ingredients for air-fried pizza burgers.

(Putting a little water in the bottom drawer of the air fryer is an important tip that will help prevent the grease from smoking as the burgers cook.) The best part is that there’s no burger splatter anywhere on your stovetop or in your oven.

Well, no… maybe that’s not quite the best part. The best part is that delicious pizza burger that ends up on your plate!

Air-Fried Pizza Burgers

  • Prep Time: 10 m
  • Cook Time: 15 m
  • Total Time: 25 m
  • Servings:
    4

Ingredients

  • 1 pound meatloaf mix ground beef, veal and pork
  • 1 tablespoon minced onion
  • cup chopped pepperoni or mini pepperoni slices
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 cup pizza sauce
  • 6 ounces sliced mozzarella cheese
  • 4 crusty round rolls ciabatta rolls or focaccia bread

Instructions

  1. Place the meatloaf mixture, minced onion, pepperoni, tomato paste, Italian seasoning salt and pepper in a large bowl. Mix thoroughly until well combined. Divide the meat into 4 equal portions and then form the hamburgers, being careful not to over-handle the meat. One good way to do this is to throw the meat back and forth between your hands like a baseball, packing the meat each time you catch it. Flatten the balls into patties, making an indentation or divot in the center of each patty. This will help keep the burger flat as it cooks.
  2. Split the rolls in half and brush the cut side with a little olive oil.
  3. Pre-heat the air fryer to 370ºF.
  4. Air-fry the burger patties for 15 minutes, flipping them over halfway through the cooking time. Spoon a little pizza sauce on each burger and top with the sliced mozzarella cheese. Air-fry at 370°F for 3 more minutes until the cheese has melted.
  5. Remove the burgers from the air fryer and let them rest. Place the rolls, cut side up into air fryer. Air-fry at 380°F for 2 to 3 minutes to toast the rolls.
  6. Transfer the rested burgers to the toasted rolls, sprinkle a little more Italian seasoning on top and serve immediately.

  1. When my grandfather made these when Iwas young he would grind the meat and pepperoni together then throw o. Bbq, so this brings home childhood memories thank you

  2. I assume these were cooked in an air fryer with baskets. I have an air fryer oven. Is there any change I should make for the oven? I can’t put water in the oven.

    1. Hi Debbie. The water is just to catch the grease that drips. I’m not sure what sure which air fryer oven you are using – in the Blue Jean Chef oven you could put water in the baking tray below the basket. If there’s no place for the water in your oven, don’t worry.
